After their training, Makay’s pioneering beekeepers began to set up the first hives while gathering around them interested villagers. A year and a half after the project started, more than 50 hives have been installed on 7 different sites, and the project now involves 29 beekeepers. That’s a good start.

At the beginning of 2018, the Naturevolution team in Madagascar carried out the missions prior to the launch of the beekeeping project in Makay. While, on the French side, the team is busy to supplement the project budget, it is necessary to set up the technical support for the project, assess the situation specific to each village, and identify the first beekeepers.

In 2018, Naturevolution started a beekeeping activity in villages near the Makay massif in Madagascar. The aim of this pilot project is to train 15 beekeepers and 2 artisans in 4 villages in the southern part of the massif, and to gather the necessary elements to launch a larger project.

Developing a beekeeping industry in ten villages around the Makay protected area. The aim is to provide local people with additional income while encouraging them to respect and preserve the forests of the massif. To this end, apiaries will be set up, beekeepers will be trained and equipped, and the honey produced will be sold locally and internationally.
